Jake Sully is an ex-Marine who volunteers, in place of his deceased brother, for an ongoing mining operation on a distant moon called Pandora.

He quickly finds himself thrust into hostilities between humans and the indigenous, exotic life forms including the Na'vi tribe. The Na'vi are 10-foot tall, blue, sentient humanoids.

Because of similar DNA with his brother, Jake becomes an Avatar - a human consciousness in an alien body. Herein lies the conflict he faces and is torn between two worlds in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people who have now adopted ... an Avatar.
